In Italy, a 35-year-old musician had to undergo surgery to remove a brain tumor. For this, the doctors asked him to play what he liked most with his instrument.

The procedure was performed with the patient awake and lasted about 9 hours. The doctor explained that playing an instrument implies using a very high cognitive function, which allowed them to verify that everything was going well.

The musician chose to play the soundtrack to the 1970 film Love Story and the Italian national anthem several times during the proceedings. Dr. Christian Brogna, who directed the procedure, expressed; “The goal of awake surgery is to remove the brain tumor or a vascular malformation such as cavernomas located in specific areas of the brain, preserving the patient’s quality of life.”
