Ingredients for the dough (yields 10 or 12 arepas): 4 cups of precooked cornmeal, 5 cups of water and salt to taste.

Ingredients for the filling: You can choose the filling you want, the most popular options are ham and cheese, chicken, meat and vegetables. Both in terms of chicken and meat, the shredded preparation is usually used. In the case of chicken, you should boil it for about half an hour and then shred it with a fork. As for the vegetables, you can choose the ones you like the most and sauté them with a little oil in a pan.

Preparation of the dough:

The process to make the arepas is very simple. First you will have to place the salt and water in a bowl, and then gradually add the cornmeal. Stir slowly by hand or with a spatula while incorporating the flour. Let stand one or two minutes and then knead until you get a smooth dough. The next step is to form round balls of dough and flatten them so that they are circular, of the thickness that you like the most.

You can fry them, grill them or in the oven.

The last step is to cut the tortillas crosswise and put the filling that you like the most inside.

Important tip: if the edges of the arepa crack when you cook it, it means that the preparation lacks water. Also, once the dough is made, you can freeze them to enjoy them later.
