Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero’s recent comment on the cost of yerba mate, which reaches $1,000, has generated various reactions on social networks and has raised the question of what other basic products have also overcome that economic barrier, requiring more than one bill of the baker

A survey carried out by TN in different online supermarket chains reveals that a 4-pack of frozen burgers retails for about $1,097, while ready-to-cook chicken patties (also in 4-packs) fetch $1,349.

In the case of cream cheeses or Port Salut, prices exceed that barrier, even doubling it. A kilo of cream cheese is around $2,460, that of Port-Salut at $2,560, and the light cream cheese is $2,644.

Toilet paper, another essential element in the home, also has exceeded $1000. Packs of four rolls start at around $1,115, while packs of six start at $1,947.. Prices vary by make and model, with the average for a pack of four 80-meter rolls around $1,443.

Oil is another product that has exceeded $1000, excluding those within the Fair Prices program. A 1.5-liter container ranges between $1,019, $1,045, and $1,571, depending on the brand. In the case of olive oil, prices are even higher, reaching $1,144, $1,233, and $1,700 for a half-liter container.

Even ground coffee has passed the $1,000 mark, including those products included in the Fair Prices program. Half a kilo of ground coffee is available in the gondolas at a price that oscillates between $1,238, $1,305 and $1,536. If you opt for a kilo, the price exceeds $2000.

Powdered laundry soap has also surpassed $1,000. Brand prices vary, with 3-kilo options ranging from $1,040, $1,500, $1,800, and $2,000. In the case of 3-liter liquids, prices are close to $3,000.

These rising prices of basic products generate concern among the population and pose challenges to maintain access to food and essential items in a difficult economic context.
