Will Smith resigned this Friday from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after the aggression he starred in during the Oscars with Chris Rock, whom he slapped for a joke he made about his wife’s hair.

The actor communicated his decision through a statement, in which he maintains: “I resign from being a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and I will accept any other consequences that the Board deems appropriate.”

In it, he adds: “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, everyone in attendance and the global audience at home.”

On the other hand, he acknowledged that “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I have deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. My heart is broken”.

“I want to refocus attention on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to return to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”

The actor surprised the whole world during the delivery of the last Oscars, last weekend, when he slapped Chris Rock, who had made a joke in bad taste mocking the alopecia of Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith’s wife .
